7/26/04 Nantucket News from Capt. Lynne Heyer

As I look out my door this morning, I see that it’s cool and clear outside. The sun is trying to come through the high clouds, and another week is beginning. The fishing this past week has been up and down for some. Great Point was re-opened to the tip, but I heard last night that it might have closed again. I just spoke to the folks at the gate house. They say that the point is still open. The fishing up at the tip has been pretty good with a mix of fish, bass and blues. A few customers said that they were getting bass during daylight hours on Bombers and other swimming lures. The Blues were pretty small at the tip itself, but much bigger along the Galls.

The north-northeast wind should push the bait right onto the beach on the ocean side. Also, a great spot in this wind direction is the Horse Shed. One of our beach guides would love to fish that spot in this wind direction.

I am also hearing some good reports on the south side of the Island at Madequecham. The bass taking small sand eel patterns in the early morning. That also would be a great place to fish with flies in this wind direction.

Before this cooler weather came through, bass on the north shore of the island were cruising near the Jetties and Cliffside Beach club all the way down to the public beach in Dionis. They were hungry a couple days, but wised up fast. Small clousers and crab patterns were working well.

The inside of the Jetties area has been productive, too. Folks fishing the inside on the sand bar towards the eel grass beds have been picking up schoolies in the morning.

On the west end of the island, the Bonito Bar has been fairly productive. Though it seems that you have to be in the perfect spot to get them. Capt. Jeff landed five yesterday and dropped one all on spinning tackle, but what fun his charter had. I was also told that Capt. Tom was in the perfect spot a couple days ago and had the same luck. I guess for the rest of us we hope that we anchor in the perfect spot and get lucky. There are plenty of fish to go around, and the bones should be here for a bit.
