Funding for Dam Removal on the Penobscot

TU Headquarters has announced a significant success in obtaining federal funds to support removing dams on Maine 's Penobscot River . The Omnibus Appropriations bill that passed Congress in December included the $10 million for the Penobscot restoration project on which we'd been working for four years. This funding will be added to other approximately $15 million in funds already in the bank, much of it raised by our conservation allies in Maine, and will allow our coalition to buy the targeted dams and remove them (two removed, one bypassed) in the coming years (and a few more dollars). To get funding of this amount through this Congress under substantial constraints is a great tribute to the quality of the project, the good work of our volunteers in Maine , and the effective coalition that advocated for it. Read the TU press release (PDF file - 17 KB) that explains the funding and the project.
