Bottled Water Industry Seeking Water Withdrawal Permits

Massachusetts legislative hearing scheduled on *the need for a moratorium on permits from the bottled water industry, pending a comprehensive assessment of the public needs for water resources, and the current status of water in Massachusetts.*

The hearing was initiated by Senator Pam Resor and Rep. Frank Smizik in response to an Op-Ed in the Boston Globe by local water conservation expert, Amy Vickers (Amherst), and at the further urging from the newly formed Massachusetts Campaign to Defend Local Water (c/o Clean Water Action Fund, Boston).

The hearing will be held at the State House in Boston on November 6, 2008 from 1:00-4:00 PM, in Hearing Room A-2 before the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture. The committee is chaired by Sen. Pamela Resor and Rep. Frank Smizik. The Campaign, a coalition of dozens of local and state organizations, homeowner groups and individuals, will present oral and written testimony.

A press conference will take place immediately after the hearing. Another press conference will be held within one week in Amherst, MA.
