On behalf of the staff at Trout Unlimited, we would like to say thank
you for your help in passing one of the greatest public lands packages of all times out of the Senate.
On Thursday, January 15, 2009, the Senate voted 73-21 in favor of passage of the Public Land Management Act, S. 22. By taking action online and showing your support for the omnibus package, you have helped move a significant piece of legislation. The bill contains a number of measures that TU played a lead role in, including: the Wyoming Range Legacy Act, a bill that will protect 1.2 million acres of the Wyoming Range from oil and gas development; the Copper-Salmon Wilderness Act that would protect 13,700 acres of headwater habitat along the Elk River, one of the best coastal steelhead and salmon rivers in the Northwest; permanent protection of the National Landscape Conservation System, a network of highly valuable public lands of acute interest to anglers and hunters; and the McKeon-Boxer California Wilderness Act that would designate as wilderness 470,000 acres along the East Side of the Sierra Nevada range and in the northern San Gabriel Mountains, and would designate stretches of three rivers as Wild and Scenic, including the Upper Owens River and Piru Creek, which are famous trout fisheries.
This is a huge victory for all of us at Trout Unlimited and one that would not have been possible without your help. We sincerely thank you and look forward to your support when the time comes for the House to take this up in the next few weeks.
Sincerely,
Steve Moyer
Vice President for Government Affairs
