The Battenkill River, by John Kudukey

Quechee, VT - August 25, 2009

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is proud to present photographer John Kudukey and his work documenting the Battenkill River. Kudukey’s intimate portraits of the Battenkill River will be exhibited at VINS Nature Center from September 5 through October 24.

Kudukey explains that the photographs in this exhibit “offer the viewer glimpses of the Battenkill through its seasons and moods as it flows from its headwaters near Manchester, Vermont to its confluence with the Hudson River in New York.” Arguably one of America’s most famous rivers and known primarily for its cool clear trout waters, the Battenkill is woven into the fabric of the cultures of Vermont and New York.

Kudukey’s interest in the Battenkill River started when he was a young boy, reading fishing magazines and wondering what it would be like to fish on such a famous trout stream. In the summer of 2005, he made his first cast into the river’s waters and discovered the beauty in the river. For over a year, he observed and recorded, through his photographs, the river’s varied and transient moods.

Professionally, Kudukey’s work has been influenced by several professional photographers, most notably his friend and mentor, the late Fred Picker. He frequently conducts workshops for the Vermont Center for Photography where he also serves on the board of directors.
