This spring, one of the partners involved in the ongoing restoration of the Quashnet River on Cape Cod learned that the National Park Service agreed to participate in the work along this sea run brook trout stream running into Waquoit Bay. Trout Unlimited, through the leadership and vision of Fran Smith, a member of the Cape Cod chapter of TU, has worked for more than 25 years preserving and enhancing the Quashnet and its watershed. This spring, a group of more than a dozen TU members from the Cape Cod, Southeast and Greater Boston chapters planted 400 hardwood trees along a section of the river to provide shade and cover for the trout.
The National Park Service will participate through its Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance program, according to Brendan Annett, the Stewardship Coordinator for the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Cape Cod TU member. The Park Service staff will advise on improving methods for removal and control of invasive brush, selection of species for riparian vegetation and design and placement of habitat improvement structures.
Fran Smith and other Cape Cod chapter members hold regular work days along the Quashnet. To participate, or to find out more about the Quashnet, call Fran at 508-548-2554 or Howie Strathie at 508-428-8349.
