Red Brook Open to Fishing
Over ten years ago, a sea run brook trout stream in Wareham named Red Brook was donated to Trout Unlimited by the Lyman family. The bequest was to open over time, with TU taking on another share of ownership as each of the Lyman brothers passed on. Hal Lyman was the former publisher of Saltwater Sportsman magazine, and a resident of Cambridge. The Lymans made the bequest because they were impressed with the work Trout Unlimited had done restoring the Quashnet on Cape Cod, beginning in the mid-80s and continuing to this day.
Several years ago, TU entered into an agreement with the Trustees of the Reservations, whereby the Trustees would own the 600 acres around Red Brook, and TU would cooperate in managing the fishery with the Trustees and the Massachusetts Division of Fish and Wildlife. The management plan is still being developed. But this spring, Red Brook for the first time was opened to fishing to the public. It is an artificial lures only stream, not fly fishing only. It is all catch and release.
If you would like to fish Red Brook, or better yet participate in one of the Red Brook workdays, contact Warren Winders of the Southeast Massachusetts chapter of TU at 781-878-1074.
