Update on the Penobscot River Salmon Run
The run on the Penobscot is even better than last year's, with more than 1,300 fish going through the trap on the Veazie Dam as of three weeks ago. The heavy rains of the past couple of weeks will trigger more fish to make their way up river. Under the plans negotiated last year, within the next five years, there will be no need to trap salmon and move them over the Veazie Dam. That dam and one other above it will be removed. Some $25 million will need to be raised to pay Pennsylvania Power and Light for the dams, according to the agreement that led to the removal plan.
