Quashnet River Workday Sunday, September 19

The Cape Cod Chapter of Trout Unlimited is sponsoring a workday on Sunday, September 19, 2004 on the Quashnet River, a sea run brook trout stream flowing into Waquoit Bay on the south side of Cape Cod. The meeting place is on Martin Road in Falmouth at 9 AM. The work session will last three to four hours. This month, the crew will electroshock the entire project area, nearly 7,000 feet of river.

Trout Unlimited spearheaded the restoration on the Quashnet beginning 25 years ago. It is not stocked, and has a population of wild, native sea run brook trout. This spring, 400 native trees were planted along one section of the stream to provide cover.

In May, two overhead covers were installed, which created 94 square feet of artificial undercut banks and three J logs, new devices recommended to TU by the TU/National Park Service office in Concord, New Hampshire. The J logs will create a pool slightly downstream from the log and cause a break in the surface current at or below the log to provide additional overheard cover from birds of prey. Instream habitat improvements will continue this fall, according to Fran Smith, who is coordinating the restoration work on the Quashnet, and has been at it since the beginning. For more information, call Fran at 508-548-4087 or Bob Nickerson 508-428-8320.
