Funding for Dam Removal on the Penobscot - click for article
Current Issue (12/21/07):
TU Headquarters has announced a significant success in obtaining federal funds to support removing dams on Maine 's Penobscot River . The Omnibus Appropriations bill that passed Congress in December included the $10 million for the Penobscot restoration project on which we'd been working for four years.

MA/RI Council Chairman's Message: Protecting Sea-Run Brookies - click for article
Current Issue (11/14/07):
Because nobody has looked hard to discover just how many sea-run brook trout we have, they are an unknown commodity at this point. And unprotected. Because Massachusetts has no closed season on trout any longer, these fish, which are on spawning redds as I write, are vulnerable to intrusion from various sources, including unknowing, or worse, knowing anglers.

President Declares Stripers a Game Fish - click for article

President George Bush signed a new executive order directing the federal government to make the striped bass a game fish in federal waters, and encouraging states that haven't already done so to adopt this management tool within their state waters.

Invasive Algae Species Found in New England - click for article

An invasive species of algae, commonly called “didymo” or “rock snot,” has been found in the Upper Connecticut River and in Vermont 's White River. New England TU Members need to pull together to help stop the spread of didymo before it devastates wild trout populations.

Funding directly benefiting fisheries and stream habitat represents less than 4.5 percent of the allocations made from the Farm Bill conservation programs. Tell Congress that we need a fish friendly farm bill.
